Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI)
The Virgin Media Business / Imerja partnership goes from strength to strength as they are formally awarded preferred supplier status by the Royal National Lifeboat Institute for the provision of their next generation wide area network.
Secured through a formal competitive tender, Virgin Media Business and Imerja worked together to develop an innovative proposal to deliver a modern business class wide area network supporting the Institute’s head quarters in Poole, 12 regional offices and 258 lifeboat stations in support of the RNLI’s Strategic Plan.
Arguably the most diverse network in the UK, the project will see the implementation of wireless and wired local area networks in all the lifeboat stations across the UK, Republic of Ireland and the Channel Islands. These will be interconnected to regional offices and the Poole HQ by Virgin Media Business' IP VPN infrastructure and also include the provision of a secure and diversely connected internet service.
Whilst it is not envisaged the network will carry emergency calls, the infrastructure is fundamental in the delivery of the RNLI’s operations and will be underpinned by a comprehensive 24x7 support and management service over the next 5 years.

Based on Cisco architecture, the network will provide multiple logical networks and a granular class of service to prioritise the differing traffic types across the infrastructure. This will be delivered against a comprehensive service level agreement with a wide range of management statistics being provided in support of its operation and to enable effective capacity planning.
Imerja is jointly responsible for the design and delivery of multiple logical wired and wireless networks at all of the 271 sites, along with the design and implementation of the network-wide management and reporting platform to be used by Virgin Media Business' Network Operations Centre in Peterborough. Post implementation Imerja will continue to assist in the on-going support and management of the network.
